About
The International Journal of Rural Criminology (IJRC) is a peer-reviewed multi- and cross-disciplinary journal dedicated to publishing both theoretical and empirical work on rural crime and criminal justice issue throughout the world. It is a continuation of the journal of the same name, whose first five volumes were published in The Ohio State University Knowledge Bank. The journal now serves as the official organ of the International Society for the Study of Rural Crime; the American Society of Criminology’s Division of Rural Criminology; and the European Rural Criminology Working Group of the European Society of Criminology.
Focus and Scope
The International Journal of Rural Criminology (IJRC) is a double blind peer-reviewed journal dedicated to publishing empirical and theoretical work related to crime and criminal justice issues associated with diverse rural places of the world. “Rural criminology” has become the established term for the growing body of multi- and cross-disciplinary scholarship, and welcome are submissions which explore:
- theories of rurality and crime
- space and place data collection and methodologies associated with the challenges of rural research
- rural offending
- criminal justice processes, institutions and policy
- rural policing
- crime prevention
- practices that seeks solutions to rural crime and the security of rural peoples and rural communities
- and other related topics
IJRC provides a scholarly forum for the publication of both empirical and theoretical work on rural crime in societies around the world. It also provides an outlet for practitioners to provide insights into innovations in tackling rural crime. IJRC’s goals are to:
- unite cross-disciplinary international scholars with research interests in rural crime and rural society
- facilitate collegial alliances and collaborations
- allow for the sharing of cutting-edge research for engagement and impact
- provide opportunities for post-graduate and early career researchers to disseminate their work
- publish valuable evidence-based research that enhances the well-being of rural communities
- heighten international scholarly, community and industry awareness of the study of rural crime
- provide, in addition to research articles, a forum for review essays and book reviews
The journal serves as the official organ of the International Society for the Study of Rural Crime, Inc.; the American Society of Criminology’s Division of Rural Criminology; and the European Rural Criminology Working Group, European Society of Criminology. Manuscripts must be submitted in conformance with the latest version of manuscript style by the 7th edition of American Psychological Association (“APA style”). However, prospective authors should inquire first with the editors before submitting in alternative styles.
Submission Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
- The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
- The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
- Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
- The text is double-spaced; uses 12-point Times New Roman font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
- The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
- If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions on Ensuring an Anonymous Review have been followed.
- To comply with the terms of the publisher's Crossref membership, Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) must be included with references when they are available. To check for DOIs, you can use the Simple Text Query on the Crossref website. By checking the box, you assert that you have included DOIs where applicable.
- It is the responsibility of the lead author of any manuscript to obtain any and all necessary permissions for copywrite material which is utilised (refer to Copywrite Notice)
- Submissions should include, on a separate page, the following:
- a title (and if necessary a sub-title) for the manuscript
- an abstract of between 200 and 300 words
- five key words
- ORCD id for each contributing author
- Author(s) name(s), institution/affiliation, and a brief biography of between 40 and 60 words
- All figures, charts, graphs, and images include alt text.
Copyright Notice
This Author Agreement for the International Journal of Rural Criminology ("Agreement") is entered into by and between The Ohio State University, on behalf of its University Libraries ("Publisher") and the author ("Author").
For good and valuable consideration, Publisher and Author agree as follows:
1. Author hereby grants to Publisher the right to publish, reproduce, distribute, translate, transmit and display his/her submitted work and an abstract thereof ("Work") in the International Journal of Rural Criminology in whole or in part and in all formats and all media. as well as to ensure accessibility of works under University policy and current web accessibility standards. Author also hereby grants to Publisher the right for Publisher to enter into agreements with third parties that grant such third parties any or all of the rights that Author has granted to Publisher herein. The aforementioned rights may include the rights necessary to index and abstract the Work. The Author agrees that any subsequent publication of the Work will credit International Journal of Rural Criminology as the site of first publication and provide a link to International Journal of Rural Criminology. This Agreement is subject to the terms and expectations outlined on Publisher's website (http://go.osu.edu/publishing-services).
2. Author represents and warrants that: (1) they are the creator and rights holder of the Work; (2) Publisher's exercise of the rights granted to Publisher herein will not infringe or violate any copyright or any other right of a third party; (3) if the Work contains any third party content, they have obtained the unrestricted permission of the copyright owner or that use of third party material is allowed because the material is in the public domain or an appropriate fair use analysis has been performed and there is a reasonable belief that use is permitted and (4) the Work contains nothing libelous or otherwise unlawful. Author hereby agrees to indemnify and hold harmless Publisher and its trustees, officers, employees, agents, and subgrantees from all claims related to Publisher's exercise of the rights granted to Publisher herein or related to the subject matter covered in Author's representations and warranties.
The International Journal of Rural Criminology is published under a Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives license to allow for certain types of reuse without permission. By submitting this agreement, the Author agrees to apply a CC BY-ND 4.0 license to the Work upon publication.
Peer Review
Submissions to the International Journal of Rural Criminology will first receive an editor's review to determine if the submission fits within the Focus and Scope of the journal. All submissions are reviewed by peers who have the appropriate knowledge and expertise. All IJRC submissions are peer-reviewed through a double anonymous process, that is, neither those who submit a manuscript know the identity of those who review their manuscript, nor do reviewers know the identity of those who submitted a manuscript to IJRC. The final publication decisions are made by the Editor based on information gathered from the peer reviews.

Publication Cycle
The International Journal of Rural Criminology is published by The Ohio State University Libraries twice each year, in March and September.
